What's Happening!
Forty-one guests joined the MCHC for the Rolling Cemetery Tour on June 3, 2023. The group learned about the history of 18 cemeteries and made bus stops at 9 of them, all situated in East Central and Southeastern Montague County. Thanks to all who worked to make the event a success, including the Saint Jo ISD for the loan of a bus and driver. Typically we conduct Rolling Tours every two or three years.

Every year we conduct a Talking Tombstone Tour at a cemetery in Montague County. In 2018 we did one at the Montague Cemetery; 2019 was the Old Spanish Fort Cemetery; 2020 was the Ringgold Cemetery; 2021 was at the "New" Perryman Cemetery, and in 2022 we did one at Mountain Park Cemetery in Saint Jo. Bowie's Elmwood Cemetery was in October 2023, and Nocona Cemetery is next!
We also conduct "virtual" tours. In 2020 it was Ghost Towns of Montague County, and in 2021 it was Forgotten Cemeteries of Montague County, and in 2022 we did Red River Station. In 2024, we are doing a "virtual" tour of the Butterfield Stage Route as it crossed through Montague County at the County Annex building.
We also are involved in obtaining historic markers and historic dedications, like the Catholic Cemetery, Bob Stone Confederate Camp, several other cemeteries ... among several other sites in the works!
Lots to do history-wise in Montague County! 2024 MCHC events follow:
